Oslo comes from As, the Norse word for God and Lo meaning field and is the oldest of the Scandinavian capital cities. Its vast boundaries take in huge areas of woods, sand and water and you're as likely to spend you time swimming or trail-walking as strolling round the city centre.
Night-owls can enjoy the vibrant bar scene in down town Oslo as pubs are open until 3am or after, while the arty types can view the Scream portrait in the Edvard Munch Museum.
