Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival/Reykjavík

Arrival in Keflavik, meet and greet followed by transfer to Reykjavík. If you arrive early, we recommend stopping at the Blue Lagoon on your way to Reykjavík (not included) and/or getting the Reykjavík Tourist Card, which grants you access to all the museums owned by the city of Reykjavík, all the swimming pools in Reykjavík and all buses that run within the greater Reykjavík area. Stay in a hotel or guesthouse in Reykjavík.

Day 2: Gullfoss/Geysir and Hveravellir

Head to Þingvellir National Park before experiencing some of the best-known natural phenomena in Iceland: the great Geysir and Gullfoss waterfall. Then traverse the Kjölur highland road to Hveravellir, a high-temperature geothermal area where you can find interesting hot springs and stunning landscapes off the beaten track. Stay in the Varmahlíð area.

Day 3: North Iceland

Drive to Akureyri and visit the beautiful Goðafoss waterfall on the way to Lake Mývatn. Stay overnight around Lake Mývatn.

Day 4: Lake Mývatn and surroundings

Explore the surroundings of Lake Mývatn. Go to Jökulsárgljúfur National Park, where you will find the canyon Ásbyrgi, Hljóðaklettar, the Hverfell crater, Hólmatungur and of course Dettifoss—the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Stay overnight around Lake Mývatn.

Day 5: Northeast Highlands

Take the mountain road along the glacier river Jökulsá á Fjöllum to Mt. Herðubreið, ‘the queen of the wilderness’. Herðubreiðarlindir, an oasis on the edge of the Ódáðahraun lava field should not be missed. The huge caldera of Askja, home of Lake Öskjuvatn, is a short drive away, and there you will also find the explosion crater Víti, which is partly filled with hot water. Stay overnight in Möðrudalur valley.

Day 6: Vatnajökull Glacier

Drive south through the rugged eastern fjords and take the jeep track to Lónsöræfi nature reserve by the eastern part of Vatnajökull glacier. Lónsöræfi, carved with gorges and gullies and coloured by several Rhyolite intrusions, is one of the most beautiful and interesting hiking areas in the country. Overnight south of Vatnajökull glacier.

Day 7: Skaftafell National Park

Take a trip (optional) in a local farmer’s hay cart to cape Ingólfshöfði, rich in birdlike and the short-time home of Ingólfur Arnarson, discoverer of Iceland. After seeing cape Ingólfshöfði, take a boat ride on Jökulsárlón Glacial Lagoon before you head to Skaftafell National Park. In Skaftafell,
there are several interesting hiking trails, including one to the small but beautiful waterfall Svartifoss, framed by a series of basalt columns. Stay overnight in Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Day 8: Landmannalaugar – Natural hot springs and c

Explore the beautiful surroundings of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, including Systrastapi, the Dverghamrar cliffs and Kirkjugólf. Then take the Fjallabak highland route towards Landmannalaugar, stopping by the Eldgjá fissure system and Ófærufoss waterfall. In Landmannalaugar, a geothermal area
surrounded with stunning Rhyolite peaks, you can bathe in a completely natural hot pool before driving to the highland centre Hrauneyjar. Stay overnight in Hrauneyjar.

Day 9: Mt. Hekla and Reykjanes

Visit the valley of Þjórsárdalur, including the excavated farm of Stöng that was devastated by the Hekla eruption in 1104. The reconstruction of the Viking Farm was built in Þjórsárdalur based on the excavation at Stöng. On the way back, you will be driving on the base of Mt. Hekla, the most active volcano in Iceland and one of the most famous volcanoes in the world. Then take the southern road to the Reykjanes peninsula. Visit the cove Krýsuvík and Lake Kleifarvatn before driving into Reykjavík. Stay overnight in Reykjavík.

Day 10: Departure

Transfer to Keflavik airport with FlyBus. If your flight is in the afternoon, you can stop at the Blue Lagoon and even take a little tour of the Reykjanes peninsula (not included).
